In a rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, where startups are competing to deliver advanced bots for business efficiency, Read AI is making significant strides by integrating its AI capabilities with key platforms like Slack, email, and various enterprise tools. The company has recently secured $50 million in a Series B funding round led by Smash Capital, following a notable $21 million during its Series A just six months ago. This new investment is aimed at bolstering the development of its product offerings and expanding its user base.

Read AI co-founder David Shim shared insights with TechCrunch about the company’s impressive growth trajectory since its Series A funding round earlier this year, resulting in over 100,000 new accounts among both enterprise and individual users. “In less than six months, we’ve doubled our sign-ups, active users, and monthly recurring revenue, surpassing even our most aggressive projections,” Shim stated, emphasizing the importance of leveraging their current momentum for this latest funding round.

Although Shim refrained from disclosing the exact valuation of Read AI, he mentioned that it has seen a positive adjustment in line with the company’s growth metrics. Smash Capital’s managing partner, Brad Twohig, explained that his investment strategy focuses on companies utilizing a product-led growth model, a description that aligns perfectly with Read AI’s operational approach. Twohig expressed enthusiasm for companies that serve a large audience while also addressing enterprise needs simultaneously.

With the goal of enhancing productivity, Read AI has recently rolled out a Chrome extension that integrates functionalities to manage schedules, produce meeting reports, and facilitate quick additions to meetings. This extension is designed to emphasize key points within extensive email threads, automatically generating email drafts based on prior communications, and summarizing important notes gathered from meetings or relevant Slack conversations. Such functionalities are already paralleled by email tools from services like Shortwave and Superhuman.

The Read AI Chrome extension is being offered at no charge, a decision highlighted by Shim as a strategy to expand their product offerings while capitalizing on the new funding. “Wherever you work, we’re pulling in that content, and we’re giving you summaries; we’re giving you recommendations. That’s a bigger opportunity,” Shim remarked, noting that although maintaining quality comes with its costs, the company is committed to establishing a robust presence in this growing market.

Twohig noted the commoditization of meeting transcription services, but pointed out that Read AI’s approach—deploying its bot across various platforms—positions it uniquely in the marketplace. “We first encountered Read AI as an assistant in meetings. After discussions with David, we grasped a broader vision of how this tool can assist users in their everyday tasks,” Twohig elaborated, reinforcing the idea that Read AI acts as a co-pilot to enhance teamwork and productivity.

Currently boasting a team of 40 employees, Read AI aims to triple its workforce to 100 by the end of Q1 2025. The Series B funding round also saw participation from earlier investors like Madrona and Goodwater Capital, underscoring strong confidence in Read AI’s potential for future growth.

In a significant move within the competitive AI search landscape, Perplexity has announced the launch of its new native Mac application, positioning itself against established rivals such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Quora’s Poe app—both of which are known for their capabilities in aggregating large language models. Earlier this month, Perplexity generated buzz by teasing the app’s release and inviting users to sign up for preorders, ensuring they would be notified upon its availability.

The application is available for free, with an option to upgrade to Perplexity Pro at a subscription fee of $20 per month or $200 annually. This upgraded service allows users to conduct over 300 in-depth Pro searches, significantly enhancing the quality of search results compared to the basic free tier, which provides quicker, less detailed responses.

Enhancing user convenience, the Mac app enables rapid invocation of Perplexity’s search capabilities through customizable keyboard shortcuts, making the experience more seamless for users. Notably, the introduction of voice mode, file upload, and voice dictation functionalities are designed to cater to those who prefer audio responses, thereby providing a more accessible platform for communication.

Additionally, the app facilitates interaction through the ability to ask follow-up questions and conveniently browse conversation history via a sidebar. Prior to this launch, Perplexity had already made strides in the mobile sector, having released both iOS and Android apps last year, indicating a clear strategy to expand its user base across various platforms.

In the backdrop of its latest product launch, Perplexity is reportedly seeking to raise $500 million in new funding. According to recent reports from The Wall Street Journal, this investment could double the startup’s valuation to a staggering $8 billion, illustrating increasing investor interest in AI-driven technologies. Moreover, tensions have arisen as The New York Times issued a cease-and-desist letter to Perplexity earlier this month, accusing the startup of scraping content and plagiarism, highlighting the challenges that companies in this sector might face as they navigate legal and ethical landscapes.

As the battle for dominance in the AI search technology space intensifies, Perplexity’s latest app could play a crucial role in its strategy to differentiate itself from well-established competitors. The unique features, competitive pricing, and commitment to user experience position the app as a compelling option for those looking to leverage AI in their search queries. With an eye on future growth and innovation, Perplexity is certainly a company to watch in the evolving tech landscape.
