At this year’s CES, Eufy revealed its latest innovation in home cleaning technology: the E20 robot vacuum, touted as the first of its kind to serve as a three-in-one device, functioning not just as a robot vacuum but also as a stick and hand vacuum. This new gadget has already won a CES Best of Innovation award, generating buzz among tech enthusiasts and homeowners alike. However, early impressions indicate that the E20 may not live up to the high expectations generated by its promotional material. After spending a week testing the E20, my experience with the product was a mix of intrigue and disappointment.

Eufy has gained a solid reputation for producing high-quality home security cameras in recent years, but its track record with vacuum cleaners has been less impressive. The Omni S1, which I tested last year, sparked interest with its unique design and decent performance, but I ultimately found it to be overpriced compared to its rivals. The X10 Pro Omni received a slightly more favorable review from me, being described as “pretty good” for its price point. Thus, I approached the E20 with cautious optimism.

Upon receiving the E20, I was surprised by its compact and lightweight packaging, a refreshing change from the large boxes usually associated with robot vacuums. However, once unpacked, I was left wondering about the vacuum’s design. The E20 features an exposed front, highlighting its removable handle and giving it an unfinished appearance. When detaching the handle to use it as a stick vacuum, I found the robot struggled to remain docked due to its awkward balance, which detracted from the overall user experience. Additionally, the lack of a dedicated space for storing the stick vacuum and attachments when not in use felt like a missed design opportunity.

On a positive note, once I activated the E20, it seemed to effectively map my living space. Unfortunately, it quickly became apparent that navigating that mapped space proved challenging for the device. The weight distribution of the handle made the robot cumbersome, leading to several instances where it became stuck during cleaning sessions.

As a stick vacuum, the E20 performed adequately, though its height felt somewhat short compared to the more advanced models I had previously tried from brands like Dyson, Samsung, and Narwal. One notable drawback was its limited dust capacity; I found myself needing to return to the docking station multiple times, even when vacuuming the main floor of my modest home. Each time required disassembling the vacuum, emptying it, and reattaching the components, which became tedious.

The handheld option mirrors the stick vacuum in functionality but lacks the convenience I prefer in a handheld device. The E20 comes with a multitool attachment, my personal favorite, but I still find the need for a more accessible handheld vacuum essential for quick clean-up tasks.

Interestingly, while many competitors highlight powerful suction capabilities (with some boasting suction levels as high as 22,000 Pa), the E20 only offers 8,000 Pa in robot mode and an impressive 30,000 Pa in stick mode. This discrepancy suggests the robot and stick modes do not share a motor, leading me to question the product’s design as simply a storage unit for the vacuum handle rather than a fully integrated cleaning solution.

Despite its shortcomings, one of the E20’s key selling points is its competitive pricing. Priced at $540, and set to be available for presale on January 6 at a $50 discount, it appeals to budget-conscious consumers. However, considering its limitations as merely a vacuum without mop functionality, there may be more suitable alternatives at this price point, like the Switchbot K10+.

As Eufy continues to innovate in the home tech market, it remains to be seen whether future iterations of their robot vacuum range will address these design flaws and performance issues, but the E20 certainly leaves room for improvement. With a focus on blending convenience with functionality, Eufy has the potential to capture consumer interest, provided they refine their approach to cleaning technology for the modern home.

In a significant advancement in smart home technology, Apple is reportedly developing a doorbell camera that is poised to utilize the Face ID system for unlocking doors, as revealed by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter. This innovative device is anticipated to be ready for release at the soonest by the end of 2025.

The proposed smart doorbell camera will function similarly to how Face ID operates on iPhones, seamlessly unlocking access to your home upon recognizing the facial features of a resident. This advanced system will incorporate Apple’s Secure Enclave chip, a crucial aspect that ensures the secure storage and processing of biometric data isolated from other hardware components. This approach not only enhances privacy but also aligns with Apple’s longstanding commitment to user security.

According to Gurman, the doorbell camera is likely to be compatible with existing third-party HomeKit smart locks, facilitating a cohesive smart home experience for current users. Furthermore, there is speculation that Apple may collaborate with a smart lock manufacturer, presenting a fully integrated system right from launch. This collaboration signifies Apple’s strategy to provide consumers with a comprehensive suite of smart home products that work together efficiently.

The smart doorbell camera is anticipated to employ Apple’s innovative “Proxima” chip, combining Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functionalities which is expected to feature in upcoming iterations of the HomePod Mini and Apple TV. This integration aims to bolster connectivity and efficiency within Apple’s smart home ecosystem, paving the way for a more interconnected user experience.

This doorbell camera is just one element of a larger collection of rumors hinting at Apple’s renewed interest in the smart home market, which appears to revolve around a concept known as Apple Intelligence. Other rumored products in this portfolio include an upgraded smart home camera, an Apple-branded television, and a variety of new smart displays. Notably, one of these displays is described as an iPad-like device that can magnetically attach to wall mounts or speaker bases, while another boasts a design featuring a robotic arm, enhancing its positioning flexibility.

As Apple expands its reach into smart home solutions, the company aims to leverage its cutting-edge technology and user-centric design to redefine how consumers interact with their living spaces. With a possible early launch of this sophisticated doorbell camera on the horizon, tech enthusiasts and Apple fans alike eagerly await the company’s ambitious plans to reshape the home automation landscape. This strategic move could place Apple at the forefront of the smart home revolution, further embedding its technology into the daily lives of users around the globe. The integration of advanced security features and seamless usability is a cornerstone of Apple’s vision, indicating a promising new chapter for smart home innovation in the coming years.
