AMD‘s recent fourth-quarter earnings showed significant growth, boasting $7.7 billion in revenue and a profit margin of 51%. This was a leap from the previous year’s $6.2 billion in revenue and a 47% profit margin. The gains were primarily attributed to AMD’s data center division, which generated $3.9 billion, thanks to the success of its Epyc server processors and Instinct AI accelerators. Additionally, Ryzen CPUs contributed another $2.3 billion to AMD’s client segment, highlighting a strong overall performance. However, AMD’s gaming division, which includes graphics card sales, took a hit. With only $563 million in revenue, gaming sales plummeted by a staggering 59% compared to the previous year. Lisa Su, AMD’s CEO, attributed the decline to sluggish sales of dedicated graphics cards, in addition to semi-custom chip performance— those designed specifically for gaming consoles like Xbox and PlayStation.

The dismal performance follows the recent launch of AMD’s Radeon RX 7000 series, which has seemingly failed to capture the attention of GPU buyers. According to the Steam Hardware Survey, a widely recognized indicator of GPU market share, none of the RX 7000 series models made it into the top 50. Only two models, the 7900 XTX and the 7700 XT, made a minimal appearance, indicating a lack of enthusiasm surrounding these products. Jon Peddie Research’s estimates present a daunting picture for AMD, suggesting they sold one dedicated GPU for every seven or eight sold by Nvidia, emphasizing the stark competition.

Despite these setbacks, there’s a glimmer of hope on the horizon. AMD’s new Radeon RX 9000 series, set to launch in early March as confirmed by Su during the earnings call, looks to reinvigorate the gaming segment. The RX 9070 and 9070 XT are targeted towards the mainstream graphics card market and are depicted as bringing “high-quality gaming to mainstream players.” This promises to excite gamers looking for value-oriented 4K gaming solutions.

However, the term “mainstream” can mean different things. AMD’s CES presentation aligns the new series alongside Nvidia’s RTX 4070 Ti and 4070 Super— both priced significantly higher than consoles. If the new Radeon cards can leverage advanced technologies such as AMD’s Fidelity Super Resolution (FSR), they might reach playable frame rates at higher resolutions without requiring consumers to invest heavily.

Nvidia has launched its 50-series graphics cards, but so far, they lack major advancements over the previous generation. The GeForce RTX 5070, priced at $549, has less CUDA core power than last year’s RTX 4070 Super, potentially leaving an opening for AMD in the market. The RX 7000 series had a competitive edge in pricing compared to Nvidia’s offerings but failed to overcome Nvidia’s exclusive features—like DLSS upscaling and superior performance in ray-tracing-heavy games.

If the Radeon RX 9000 series can effectively address the shortcomings of its predecessors, it might regain the market share that AMD desperately seeks. With a new 4 nm manufacturing process promising enhanced power efficiency and next-gen ray-tracing accelerators, the RX 9000 cards could stand out in terms of quality and value. The upcoming launch in March could signify a turning point where AMD can finally challenge Nvidia’s stranglehold on the graphics card market.

As anticipation builds surrounding the new series, the gaming community watches closely. Will AMD manage to disrupt Nvidia’s dominance with this new lineup? Only time will tell. One thing is certain—AMD’s confidence in the RX 9000 series, combined with Nvidia’s tepid advancements, presents a unique opportunity for potential market shifts in the coming months. The stakes are high for both companies, but AMD’s strategy could carve a new path in the competitive GPU landscape. The pivotal moment is just around the corner as AMD prepares for what could be a transformative launch for gamers worldwide.

As the technology world convenes for CES 2025, the spotlight seems to focus more on the latest graphics card offerings from Nvidia, particularly the much-anticipated RTX 50-series GPUs. While these powerful GPUs certainly attract attention, it’s clear that Nvidia has higher aspirations beyond just hardware performance—they aim to revolutionize gaming through artificial intelligence (AI). However, the demonstrations at this year’s CES reveal a mixed bag of innovation, raising questions about the trajectory of AI development in gaming.

Nvidia’s vision, as presented at CES, is one where AI technology eliminates the need for cloud processing, enabling gaming experiences that are powered directly by PCs. Although this ambition is commendable, the execution seen in their AI demonstrations leaves much to be desired. Walking through Nvidia’s showcase, attendees witnessed early iterations of AI concepts that could evolve into something meaningful but feel rudimentary in their current form. One notable undertaking is the creation of a text-to-body motion framework intended for developers. Given the potential of this tool, industry feedback from professional animators will be critical to gauge its future utility. Additionally, Nvidia aims to transform typical gameplay dynamics with AI-driven lip-syncing and autonomous enemies that promise to make battles more unpredictable.

However, when this ambition plays out in practice, the results appear lackluster. An example of this is the AI companion, “Ally,” which Nvidia introduced in the battle royale game PUBG: Battlegrounds. In a comical demonstration, users could issue voice commands to the AI, only to encounter a character that struggled to be more than a comically inept co-op partner. My own experience with Ally was frustrating; while I entertained the idea of encouraging my AI ally to communicate like a pirate, dessen response elicited more eye-rolls than immersion. Not only did the voice commands seem stilted, but when I was in dire need of assistance, the AI appeared oblivious, shooting absently at enemies while I scrambled for survival.

Nvidia’s foray into AI-powered NPCs extends beyond just single-player games. Krafton’s use of Nvidia technology to create a life simulator called inZOI attempts to integrate decision-making AI into the lives of NPCs. Still, this concept feels more like a facsimile of The Sims than a compelling contender, lacking the charm and spontaneity present in established life simulation games.

Previous demonstrations of Nvidia’s autonomous NPCs, branded as ACE, hinted at the potential for some captivating interaction. However, this year’s demos showcase a voice generation technology that struggles with nuance. The AI voice lines were devoid of emotion, sounding as though they were drawn from a poorly conceived script. An attempted demonstration for a new game, ZooPunk, showcased a talking character whose commands often devolved into inaccuracies, revealing the limitations of the current AI capabilities. When I asked for a straightforward change of color for a virtual spaceship, the character managed to output an entirely incorrect hue, causing further bemusement.

Despite the challenges faced in their NPC technology, Nvidia’s AI ambitiously extends into desktop applications with G-Assist, a chatbot designed to optimize settings within Nvidia’s software. This AI is valuable for calculating performance levels and enhancing user experience, running directly from users’ PCs which promises a more personalized interaction. Yet, as beneficial as G-Assist appears, it lacks the formidable ingenuity one would expect from a company championing advanced AI.

Additionally, Nvidia showcased a rather unconventional artificial assistant, displayed as a talking mannequin head on users’ desktops. Utilizing various aspects of their neural network, it looked to provide users with assistance similar to other AI assistants, albeit with an odd aesthetic that registers on the wrong side of the uncanny valley. This oddity is layered with the promise of reading documents and materials uploaded to the interface—yet fundamentally it remains a straightforward text-generation tool rather than a genuinely understanding entity.

Although some innovations appear promising, the recurring issue remains that the implementation of Nvidia’s AI technology, while ambitious, feels rudimentary at best. It raises a pivotal question: how long will it take for AI to truly transform gaming experiences rather than simply adding layers of complexity? In its present state, Nvidia’s attempts to create engaging AI NPCs, while forward-thinking, remain disappointing. As gaming continues to evolve, it’s essential for companies like Nvidia to hone these AI concepts into polished, engaging experiences that resonate with players. With further development, one can only hope that AI in gaming eventually realizes its potential, emerging from these rough drafts into something that truly captivates our imagination as gamers and technologists alike.

Nvidia has announced a groundbreaking upgrade to its Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology at CES 2025. This new version, DLSS 4, introduces advanced neural rendering capabilities that leverage the power of the new RTX 50 Series GPUs. Key among these features is Multi Frame Generation, which allows for the generation of up to three additional frames for each traditionally rendered frame — a capability that could elevate frame rates by as much as eight times compared to standard rendering methods.

This impressive performance leap means that gamers can expect fully ray-traced gameplay at resolutions like 4K with frame rates soaring to 240fps, an achievement previously deemed unattainable in this context. But the advancements don’t stop there; DLSS 4 will also enhance compatibility with existing GeForce RTX GPUs, making the technology more accessible. The new transformer AI models involved in DLSS will run on a wide array of titles, utilizing the same underlying technology that powers popular AI tools such as ChatGPT, marking a pioneering milestone in the gaming graphics sector.

Moreover, Nvidia claims that its latest frame generation model is a significant improvement over its predecessor, being 40 percent faster and consuming 30 percent less VRAM. By replacing traditional Convolutional Neural Networks with this new transformer AI model, Nvidia asserts that the resulting images will experience reduced ghosting and enhanced detail, leading to a clearer and more stable visual output. These enhancements promise a richer gaming experience, particularly with titles that support ray tracing.

Nvidia has also announced a formidable list of around 75 games and applications that will support Multi Frame Generation from day one. Major titles such as Alan Wake 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Star Wars Outlaws are set to showcase this innovative technology when the RTX 50 Series GPUs launch at the end of January. In addition, over 50 existing games will be updated to incorporate the new transformer-based DLSS features across all GeForce RTX hardware, ensuring a broad range of titles will benefit from these advancements.

While performance improvements are exciting, latency remains a critical factor in gaming. In this regard, Nvidia has introduced Reflex 2, featuring Frame Warp technology designed to reduce latency by up to 75 percent. By enabling the CPU to calculate the camera position of the next frame based on the latest input before the frame is displayed, the technology aims to provide gamers with a more responsive experience. In tests conducted with The Finals, Nvidia reported a reduction in latency from 27ms using Reflex 1 to just 14ms with Reflex 2, indicating a promising step forward for competitive gaming.

This cutting-edge technology is anticipated to first reach users in The Finals and Valorant for those equipped with RTX 50 Series GPUs, followed by rollouts for other RTX devices. Additionally, for games that lack immediate updates but support DLSS, Nvidia will provide updated drivers and app options enabling users to force Multi Frame Generation on the new GPUs, allowing gamers to take advantage of the latest rendering capabilities even in existing titles.

In the context of its broader trajectory, DLSS 4 represents a notable evolution in a series that began over two years ago with DLSS 3, which introduced Frame Generation technology. The subsequent update, DLSS 3.5, launched in August 2023 with AI-driven Ray Reconstruction to enhance ray tracing quality, including path tracing for select games. As of August last year, Nvidia showcased its commitment to RTX technology by announcing support for over 600 games and applications — a clear indication of the company’s vision for the future of gaming graphics.

In a competitive landscape, Apple’s Vision Pro has emerged as a standout, clinching the title of 9to5Mac’s Product of the Year. However, as the product approaches its second year, it still has much to prove. Anticipation builds for a series of improvements that could transform Vision Pro into a mainstream success in 2025.

Despite the buzz surrounding Vision Pro, many enthusiasts were disappointed by Apple’s decision to delay introducing major AI features in 2024. The tech giant prioritized upgrades for its flagship products like the iPhone, iPad, and Mac as it strives to catch up in the AI race. Still, the good news is that Apple is expected to integrate AI into Vision Pro soon, particularly in the upcoming visionOS 3 update.

One of the most highly anticipated changes is an enhanced Siri. As a relatively new user of the Vision Pro platform, I quickly discovered that Siri plays a crucial role in spatial computing, more so than on any other Apple device—except for the HomePod. Voice-first computing stands to gain significantly from robust AI enhancements, and the combination of Siri’s ChatGPT integration, along with the powerful upgrades on iOS 18.4, could drastically enhance the overall Vision Pro experience.

Another critical area where Apple needs to step up is gaming. While the iPhone has long been perceived as a gaming powerhouse, Apple has sought to extend that reputation to other devices such as the Mac and Apple TV. Surprisingly, the Vision Pro debuted with little gaming support, despite having access to games through Apple Arcade and the App Store. Currently, there is no support for VR game controllers, marking a distinct absence of a coherent gaming strategy for visionOS.

Excitingly, reports indicate that support for PlayStation VR2 controllers may be on the horizon, signaling the potential for a broader gaming ecosystem. Apple must turn its focus toward gaming in the new year; otherwise, it risks losing traction to rival platforms that already boast strong gaming libraries.

Moreover, Immersive Video has emerged as a defining feature of Vision Pro, touted as a “killer app.” Despite its vast potential, the demand for immersive content has historically outstripped supply. Apple ended 2024 with heightened momentum in releasing Immersive Video content, which is likely to continue into 2025 given recent developments indicating ambitious content plans.

The diverse array of Immersive Video releases throughout 2024 illustrates Apple’s commitment to exploring this innovative medium further, highlighting its significant potential as both an entertainment and productivity platform. With the right refinements, Vision Pro could become a powerhouse in immersive media.

Ultimately, if Apple can deliver on these three fronts—AI enhancements, gaming support, and rich Immersive Video experiences—the Vision Pro may become increasingly appealing to a broader audience. Key considerations such as pricing, weight, and an enriched app ecosystem will also play vital roles in shaping the device’s future.

As Vision Pro evolves, how it leverages these improvements will determine its position as a viable computing platform. Apple’s commitment to establishing visionOS as a fully-featured computing environment with a strong emphasis on gaming and video content will be crucial for the device’s success in the coming years. What changes do you hope to see for Vision Pro in 2025? The conversation continues as tech enthusiasts eagerly await Apple’s next steps.

Lenovo may be on the verge of launching a new handheld gaming device, the Legion Go S, which could feature the SteamOS operating system, according to leaked images shared by Evan Blass. The images reveal two color variants—black and white—of the upcoming handheld, with a notable detail: the black version showcases a Steam button, suggesting Lenovo’s integration of Valve’s gaming platform into its device.

As the handheld gaming market evolves, Lenovo’s move toward SteamOS could signify a shift away from the predominant Windows-based models currently available from manufacturers like Asus and MSI. Recent trends indicate that consumer patience with Windows for portable devices is dwindling, particularly given the operating system’s struggle to provide an optimal gaming experience on small screens. The gaming community has been vocal about the desire for a more seamless and intuitive interface, which could incentivize OEMs to explore alternative operating systems such as SteamOS.

This speculation arises amid Valve’s recent efforts to expand its SteamOS ecosystem. Just days prior to the leak, Valve updated its branding guidelines, now promoting the label “Powered by SteamOS” for compatible hardware. This hints at potential partnerships with multiple third-party manufacturers to certify devices that run on SteamOS, expanding the reach of Valve’s gaming operating system. With CES 2025 around the corner, the timing could not be more perfect for a broader unveiling of SteamOS-powered hardware, including the anticipated Lenovo Legion Go S.

Historically, Valve’s attempts to penetrate the console market with its Steam Machines initiative met with mixed results. Launched at CES in 2013, Steam Machines intended to lure PC makers into creating Linux-based gaming systems. However, a lack of developer support for Linux games hindered the initiative’s success. This time, however, the landscape has shifted, primarily due to the development of Proton—a compatibility layer that enables Windows titles to run more efficiently on Linux-based systems. The Steam Deck, Valve’s flagship handheld, has demonstrated that many titles can perform exceptionally well on Linux, arguably making it a more viable option for gamers seeking alternatives to traditional Windows systems.

Given the growing success of the Steam Deck and its proven ability to handle a wide range of PC titles, Lenovo’s ambitions to enter the SteamOS market could be met with positive reception. As Sean Hollister from The Verge recently pointed out, the current situation is as enticing as it was twelve years ago during Valve’s initial foray into gaming hardware, but now with significantly improved prospects for success.

As rumors swirl about the Lenovo Legion Go S, gaming enthusiasts are keenly awaiting further details, as this device could not only enhance the handheld gaming experience but also reshape the competitive landscape currently dominated by Windows-based systems. If Lenovo manages to successfully launch a compelling SteamOS device, it could invite other manufacturers to reconsider their choices and possibly lead to an exciting era of diversified gaming hardware options.
