In an exciting new update, Google has enhanced its note-taking application, NotebookLM, by allowing users to customize the AI-generated Audio Overviews. This innovative feature enables users to tailor the audio discussions to their specific needs, making it easier to focus on particular topics or adapt the conversation for different audiences.
Launched last month, the Audio Overviews in NotebookLM feature two AI hosts who engage in what Google describes as a “lively” discussion based on the research notes provided by the users. However, it’s essential to note that the Audio Overviews are not designed to provide a comprehensive or objective overview; rather, they are intended to reflect the sources uploaded by the user alongside any specific instructions given prior to generating the content.
To take advantage of this new feature, users can initiate their customization process by opening a notebook in NotebookLM. After selecting the “Notebook guide,” they can navigate to the “Deep dive conversation” option. The next step is straightforward—click on “Customize” and provide the AI hosts with instructions that they would like them to follow. Whether narrowing the discussion to particular themes or adjusting the tone for specific audiences, the customization opens numerous possibilities for more personalized content generated by the app.
Alongside the removal of the “experimental” label that had previously been associated with NotebookLM, Google has also introduced a background listening option for the Audio Overviews. This feature allows users to continue listening to the discussions while multitasking within other sections of the app—effectively enhancing the user experience and maximizing productivity.
Additionally, Google has expanded NotebookLM’s capabilities by enabling it to delve deeper into YouTube videos through transcription, providing users with even more resources and content to generate their discussions around. This integration further strengthens the app’s value by allowing users to have a broader base of information while still keeping the conversation focused on their personal notes and directives.
The advancements made to NotebookLM reflect Google’s ongoing commitment to bridging the gap between technology and user-centric design. By providing customization options for AI audio outputs, users can expect a more engaging and relevant note-taking experience that meets diverse needs, whether for work, study, or personal projects. As technology continues to evolve, tools like NotebookLM are likely to play an integral role in how individuals manage their research and knowledge-sharing effectively.
