Google Expands Gemini Feature: Make Calls and Messages Without Unlocking Your Phone

Google is taking strides in enhancing the functionality of its Gemini assistant, adding a highly anticipated feature that allows users to make calls and send text messages without needing to unlock their devices. This new capability is part of Google’s ongoing efforts to improve user experience and accessibility on smartphones.

In the latest update, users can find a new setting labeled “Make calls and send messages without unlocking” located in the Gemini Settings under “Gemini on Lock Screen.” This option is designed to provide a more seamless interaction with the phone, particularly for those moments when quick communication is needed but access to the device is restricted.

Accompanying this feature, the settings section introduces an “Outgoing calls and messages” heading, which details the necessity of enabling calling and messaging applications in Gemini to utilize this new functionality effectively. This means that to take full advantage of the hands-free messaging and calling experience, users must ensure that their preferred apps are linked to the assistant.

Back in October, Google initiated the rollout of Gemini Extensions specifically tailored for the “Phone” and “Messages” apps. Although the Extensions are not yet broadly accessible, the recent addition allows users without these updates to still rely on the familiar Google Assistant capabilities, maintaining usability across devices. Users on devices that do not yet support the new “without unlocking” feature will encounter a prompt requiring them to unlock their phones, which is a traditional barrier in accessing phone functionalities.

The new setting allows users to place calls immediately while their devices remain locked, streamlining communication and enhancing convenience. As of now, this feature is beginning to reach users, but widespread availability is still pending. Those eager to access it can try force-stopping the Google app to potentially refresh their settings.

This feature is currently being noted in the Google app version 15.48 beta, indicating that it is part of a server-side update intended to incrementally introduce the functionality to a broader audience. Google has been actively refining the Gemini platform, focusing on ensuring that it meets user demands for a more intuitive and accessible phone interaction experience.

While the rollout progresses, users are encouraged to stay tuned for updates as the new calling and messaging capabilities become more broadly available. With Gemini, Google continues to push the envelope in enhancing smartphone usability, putting an emphasis on effortless interactions that prioritize user convenience.

As technology evolves, the integration of such features signifies a notable shift towards hands-free operations, aligning with current trends that favor ease of access while maintaining device security.
