In an age where technology increasingly intersects with education, the innovative startup Buddy.ai is proving to be a trailblazer in using artificial intelligence and gaming to revolutionize language learning for children. Founded by Ivan Crewkov, Buddy.ai aims to assist kids from diverse linguistic backgrounds in acquiring English as a second language through an engaging and interactive AI character.

Crewkov’s journey began back in 2014 when he relocated his family from Serbia to the U.S., where he was launching Cubic.AI, a startup focused on smart technology. However, just days before their Kickstarter campaign was set to launch, Amazon unveiled its Echo smart speaker, significantly diminishing the prospects for Crewkov’s company. This setback forced Crewkov to reassess his ideas, but it also sparked a new venture inspired by the challenges his daughters faced in adapting to an English-speaking environment.

As Crewkov observed his eldest daughter engaging with a scripted online tutor, he realized the potential of creating an animated, multimodal AI tutor that could offer more personalized and dynamic language learning experiences for children. Thus, Buddy.ai was born, designed to provide interactive English language instruction through entertaining gameplay elements. The platform has gained traction as a subscription app and is now making strides in educational institutions across countries such as Brazil.

However, Crewkov and his team faced numerous obstacles in bringing their vision to fruition, considering their deep experience in voice-based AI. Initial projections estimated a six-month timeline to launch Buddy.ai, but the reality proved far more complex, taking years to develop. Navigating legal regulations such as the Children’s Online Privacy Act (COPA) and training the AI to recognize varied children’s speech patterns added to the challenges. Crewkov highlighted the intricacies of understanding a diverse array of voices from youngsters trying to express themselves in English, emphasizing the need for significant data collection across regions with less stringent regulations.

Fast forward to seven years later, and Buddy.ai has achieved remarkable success, boasting around 55 million downloads and servicing over 22 million students annually. Fueled by this impressive growth, the company recently secured an additional $11 million in seed funding, led by BITKRAFT Ventures, alongside contributions from One Way Ventures, J Ventures, and Point72 Ventures. Fundraising posed unique difficulties, with Crewkov noting that the journey entailed discussions with 186 different investors before arriving at a partnership with BITKRAFT, whose expertise in gaming perfectly aligned with Buddy.ai’s mission.

“Children treat Buddy as a game,” Crewkov remarked, indicating that the playful nature of the application greatly enhances its appeal, particularly among young learners. This heavy gaming influence is anticipated to shape the future of Buddy.ai as it continues to grow its game design and user experience capabilities. The allocated funds will primarily support product development, with plans to recruit a head of game design and a UX design leader.

Looking ahead, Crewkov is keen on expanding plural language support while solidifying partnerships with educational institutions. This strategic direction will enable Buddy.ai to cater to a wider demographic and meet the learning needs of children from various linguistic backgrounds. Interestingly, Buddy.ai is among several companies exploring the potential of AI-driven language tutors, including Universable and Loora. However, its specific focus on children mastering English distinguishes it from competitors within the language learning sector.

Crewkov emphasizes that technology should supplement teaching, stating, “We just believe that the future is hybrid where AI tutors and AI agents can really help teachers. You just need to provide a lot of practice, practice daily. We will never have enough teachers to do that; it’s the perfect application for AI.” As Buddy.ai continues to evolve and adapt to the growing demands of language education, its innovative platform could pave the way for new standards in how children learn languages across the globe.

With the fusion of AI and gaming, Buddy.ai is creating a new paradigm for language acquisition—one where learning becomes an enjoyable adventure instead of a daunting task. As technology advances, so too does the potential for impactful educational tools like Buddy.ai to redefine how we approach language learning for children worldwide.
