Apple has announced a significant update for its users, allowing the migration of purchases across accounts dating back to the launch of its digital services. This much-awaited feature enables users with numerous Apple accounts, some up to 25 years old, to consolidate movies, music, applications, and other content into a single primary account. This transition comes as a relief to many who have long dealt with scattered purchases across various accounts due to the evolution of Apple’s service offerings over the years.

In a support document released recently, Apple outlined the steps for users to migrate apps, music, and other digital content from a secondary Apple Account to a primary one. Users who have accumulated purchases on older accounts tied to different Apple services can now consolidate this content into their everyday-use accounts through a structured process. This system is especially useful for users who may have created separate accounts to organize their purchases or separate work-related content from personal items.

The migration process requires users to navigate to the “Media & Purchases” section in the Settings app on an iPhone or iPad. However, there are specific limitations to keep in mind. Purchases cannot be migrated from or into child accounts associated with Family Sharing. The migration can be conducted once per year, which means users must carefully consider which account they wish to designate as their primary account going forward. Also, users need to ensure that no purchases have taken place within the last 15 days on either account, and there are complexities involved with music libraries intersecting between both accounts.

Moreover, the service is currently unavailable in several regions, including the EU, UK, and India, which raises questions about accessibility for Apple users worldwide. This limitation underscores the varying approaches governments take in regulating digital content and consumer rights.

In addition to the migration aspects, users must be aware that two-factor authentication needs to be activated, payment methods must be up-to-date, and other necessary configurations are required to initiate the process.
