This critical observation emerged from the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI)’s 2025 Presidential Panel, which examined the trajectory of AI research. The report, crafted by 24 distinguished researchers, highlights a misalignment between public perception and actual capabilities of AI technologies.
Panel chair Rodney Brooks from MIT remarked on the influence of the Gartner Hype Cycle, a model describing the fluctuations of technology excitement and disillusionment. According to the report, as of November 2024, public enthusiasm for Generative AI was waning, with a significant 79% of respondents confirming that current perceptions of AI capabilities diverge significantly from the reality of ongoing research. This mismatch, emphasized by 90% of the panelists, is perceived to stifle innovation, as the excitement surrounding AI is driving many research directions rather than a focus on robust science.
Brooks advised caution in interpreting the overwhelming enthusiasm surrounding AI; he believes the hype could mislead the public discourse and impact development negatively.
At the heart of the discussion is AGI, a form of intelligence capable of understanding, interpreting, and learning from information as humans do. AGI embodies a potential leap in technological progress, with far-reaching implications across various fields, including education, transportation, and reduced workloads in everyday tasks. However, a substantial 76% of the 475 experts surveyed concluded that simply enhancing current AI methodologies will not suffice for achieving true AGI.

Henry Kautz, a computer scientist at the University of Virginia and contributor to the report, noted that AI has transformed in a remarkably short period, particularly with the prominence of chatbots like ChatGPT.
Still, the report clarified that many challenges, especially concerning accuracy and trustworthiness in AI outputs, remain unresolved. Recent benchmark tests indicated that leading language models could appropriately respond to only about half of set queries. Kautz expressed optimism for ongoing improvements through innovative training methods and collaborative AI systems, which promise enhanced accuracy and reliability.
The experts emphasized that underestimating the quality of current AI models could hinder perceptions significantly, as they observe that public recognition trails behind technological capabilities by a noticeable amount.
